Che is the precocious son of radical student activists at Harvard, raised in isolated privilege by his New York grandmother during the late sixties. Yearning for his parents he absconds with a young woman called Dial and sets out on a journey that leads to a hippy commune in tropical Queensland. Here he confronts his life and learns that nothing he has known is as it seems. Carey's latest novel is less flamboyant than some of his previous work but is finely honed in its exploration of character, surroundings and relationships.
