Description

This novel is an extraordinarily poignant evocation of a lost happiness that lives on in the memory. For years now, the Ramsays have spent every summer in their holiday home in Scotland, and they expect these summers will go on forever. In this, her most autobiographical novel, Virginia Woolf captures the intensity of childhood longing and delight, and the shifting complexity of adult relationships. From an acute awareness of transcience, she creates an enduring work of art.

Reviews

"It has been claimed that Virginia Woolfs writing is a 'constant stream of consiousness' - and I couldn't agree more. "To the Lighthouse" is centred around a family vacationing at their old lighthouse. It reflects on the different dynamics that each character holds and the time that passes. Be prepared for laboriously beautiful prose, language that will make you gawk at its bewitching genius. Woolf writes as though she is putting every well-strung maddeningly lovely thought on the page. However, the writing style is not the only strength that lies within these pages- it's commentary on how deeply rooted the cuts and bruises our family leaves us with, how those wounds open up and close with the passing of time. Mothers, sisters, fathers, brothers, sons, daughters, friends, lovers, artists, childhood, all these humane roles are written here so as to haunt you. No matter how many times I re-read this book, I always find something that had yet to be discovered. I close the back cover for the hundreth time and can hear the ocean waves, a vision of the lighthouse appears before my eyes. I believe Virginia Woolf to be brillant, and this book is my proof."
