Helen of Troy: and Other Poems

Author(s): Dimitris Tsaloumas

Poetry

Helen of Troy and Other Poems is Dimitris Tsaloumas's last book of poems written in English. This new volume contains a wide range of poems, in a variety of forms, shifting in place from the Greek Islands to suburban Australia and on to the timeless plains of the imagination. It is a book of elaborate splendour, holding within it the breathtaking sequence 'A Winter Journey' that contains all the great Tsaloumas themes of the self, its world, its art, its journeys and its failures. And as always there are his great recurring symbols of the seasons, the winds, dreams, the plains and the city. Moving effortlessly between the Greek Islands and suburban Australian, these poems also cross and recross the borders of structure and chaos, life and death, inner and outer worlds, dislocation and belonging.

Product Information

"It is as though Tsaloumas's technique, his way of conceiving the poems, pulls him in two directions: one towards fullness, the other towards a stony spareness." --Martin Duwell, coeditor, "The Best Australian Poetry 2003"

Dimitris Tsaloumas (b. 1921) moved to Australia in 1952 after being persecuted for his political beliefs in his Greek homeland. Since then he has published a number of critically acclaimed works in both Greek and English.
